Award Application

1. What is Amedeo Challenge ?

Amedeo Challenge is an initiative that awards prizes to physicians who publish medical textbooks for free and anonymous access on the Internet. The awards currently cover textbook projects on Tuberculosis and total 12,500 Euro. Many more topics will be covered in the future.

Amedeo Challenge is a non-profit making initiative. The money made available by the sponsors is entirely (100%) distributed among the editors and authors of the winning teams. The Amedeo Team (www.Amedeo.com) will charge no fee for the management of the Amedeo Challenge website and the associated administrative workload.

2. Why should I apply for the Amedeo Award ?

You should think about participating in one of the Amedeo Challenges

  • if you are a physician and an expert in your field and if you want to share your experience with a global public. (If you are too young, your boss might be an expert in his field and you might persuade him to participate.)

  • if you have reason to believe that other people will listen to you if you are in your forties or retired (please check www.SeniorPhysicians.com)

  • if your are willing to update your textbook regularly.

Medical textbooks are joint efforts. You should therefore know enough experienced colleagues who can take on a chapter of your project and deal with it competently. This assumes that you know your way around the national or international scene. Usually, this requirement can only be fulfilled if you come from a university institute or one of the big teaching hospitals. For detailed information, please check the second chapter of www.freemedicalinformation.com/download36.htm

3. What will I get in return ?

If you win the award, much of your work will be decently awarded. In addition, your book will be announced via the following communication channels:

  • Free Medical Journals (>11,000 visitors per day)
  • www.FreeBooks4Doctors.com (>4,000 visitors per day)
  • Free Medical Information (>120,000 downloads from May through December 2005)
  • weekly Amedeo newsletters (>128,000 subscribers).

  • Amedeo Challenge
  • If you don't win the first prize, you'll earn much less or no money. Nonetheless, your book will achieve global attention via Amedeo Challenge, Free Medical Journals, FreeBooks4Doctors, Free Medical Information and Amedeo.

    4. Which conditions have to be met to participate in the Amedeo Challenge ?

    1. The textbook must have a minimum number of pages (Tuberculosis: 500; with references being excluded from the page count). The word count per page must be greater than 450. Please check the example at www.HIVMedicine.com/textbook/download.htm.

  • The structure of the textbook has to be that of a standard medical textbook (see www.HIVMedicine.com).
  • The textbook must be published in English. However, we expressly invite teams from non-English speaking countries to participate in the Amedeo Challenge. In these cases, the authors must pay the greatest attention to produce a linguistically perfect English text. This usually involves the cooperation of a native speaker who is also a physician and a skilled writer.
  • The textbook needs to be created de novo - the single chapters must not have been published elsewhere.
  • Two thirds of the editors and two thirds of the authors must work in university or research institutions.
  • No single author must write more than 10% of the content.
  • The authors must be the copyright holders of their articles and chapters and may not sell or share this copyright.
  • 5. How can I apply for the Amedeo Award ?

Anyone in the Textbook Team (editors or authors) may submit the application for the entire team

    1) if he is a member of Amedeo, or

    2) if he has a recommendation from an Amedeo member.

For the purpose of the current application, an Amedeo member is defined as someone who subscribed to www.Amedeo.com before January 2005 (109.114 subscribers).

Please find the application form at AmedeoChallenge.org/ac/apply2.htm.

    6. What do we need to do to win the Award ?

    A. Deadline

After applying for the Amedeo award, the Textbook Team has 365 days to publish the textbook.

    B. Publication on the Internet

To win the Amedeo Award, the Textbook Team needs to publish the PDF file of the textbook on the Internet for unrestricted and anonymous access.

At the request of the sponsor, the editors will add an acknowledgement 1) at the bottom of the first inside page of the textbook and 2) on resulting websites, stating: "This textbook was made possible by an unrestricted educational grant provided by <Sponsor> (+ URL)."

In addition, a copy of the PDF file will be deposited indefinitely at AmedeoChallenge.org to be displayed on the website at the convenience of the Amedeo Challenge Team.

    C. Copyright Removal

Following the example of HIV Medicine 2005, the editors and authors of the Textbook Team remove the copyright for all languages except three languages of their choice (see www.InfluenzaReport.com/ir/cr.html and the previous results of this policy: www.sarsreference.com/sarsref/lang.htm).

    7. The Winner

Teams which comply with the conditions mentioned under #4 and #6 will have their textbook made freely available on www.AmedeoChallenge.com and announced over the communication channels mentioned above under #3.

If more than one textbook is submitted before the deadline, there will be a vote to determine the winner. The day after the deadline, and for 30 days thereafter, all subscribers to Amedeo topics related to the subject of the textbook will be invited to participate in a poll to designate the best textbook. The winning team will receive 80% of the award.

If there is a second and a third team, they will receive the remaining 16% and 4% of the award, respectively.

If there is no third or second winning team, the remaining amount of money will be distributed to the (other) winning team(s).

    8. Payment of the Award

The editors will receive 20% and the authors 80% of the award attributed to their team. The share of the editors will be divided equally. The Authors will be paid according of the number of text pages (excluding the references) they contributed.

The corresponding part of the award will be distributed to the individual editors and authors directly by the Amedeo Challenge Team within 90 days after the poll.

    9. Application Form
