Preface HIV Medicine 2006, a medical textbook freely available over the Internet, will be downloaded more than 50,000 times in a year. At a cost of 52 € per copy, the added value will exceed 2,500,000 €. The free Internet publication of Tuberculosis 2007, which was downloaded more than 25,000 times in three weeks, will generate more than 5,000,000 Euro in book value in a single year! These two examples demonstrate that the economic implications of open-access publishing are delightfully fascinating: producing and freely distributing 100 medical textbooks could save doctors and interested lay people 500,000,000 € per year... For a start, Amedeo Challenge will collect enough money to create 100 awards of 12,500 € each. Each award will create a medical textbook (see 1. Example: Hepatitis Award; 2. Rules and Condition; 3. List of Topics). Free medical textbooks contribute to improve medical care. Amedeo Challenge will help bring together public donations and institutional sponsors and physicians willing to produce the textbooks. The currently available awards are listed at the end of the home page. A short philosophy of free medical textbooks is available at www.freemedicalinformation.com.
